A Runtamuffin Tale review by Frank Ioele
A Runtamuffin Tale by Melissa Taylor and illustrated by Marc Beauregard
This delightful book is the tale of fourteen little chicks bought as a birthday present for Lasse who works on a farm. The people are superfluous as the story centers on the chicks and
other animals on the farm.
As they grow up, they meet Bodo, the dog who befriends them. Exploring the farm, they encounter Mariett who fills their imagination with stories of his exploits. One day there comes a new guy to the farm, Loui, the dog. He starts out as an innocent troublemaker but is fostered by Bodo who straightens him out.
In between all this is a cute puddle adventure that humans and animals all enjoy.
The book has colorful and beautifully thoughtful illustrations that enhance the story. It is perfect for classroom / home storytelling or as a bedtime story.
The author reaches out to children of all ages to show how animals interact with each other and humans. For independent reading, I’d say it would be appropriate for thirrd grade. It’s a quick read and joyful read.
Highly recommended for city children who have little contact with animals other than squirrels! You’ll have to read this book to find out why it is called “A Runtamuffin Tale” because...I’m not going to tell you!
A Runtamuffin Tale by Melissa Taylor is published by Runtavision. It retails for $21.50.
