Old Manse Inn
Brewster Massachusetts
The perfect hub for your own Cape Cod adventure
by Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong
Cape Cod, Massachusetts is a world-famous travel destination known for its history, natural beauty, popular beaches, elite clientele and equality. If you are seeking the perfect hub for your own Cape Cod adventure, there is no better choice than the Old Manse Inn in Brewster, MA. This historic compound is a fantastic destination in itself.
Owners Charlie Heinz and Brian Blair searched the entire country for just the right property.
“We took the entire country, decided what parts of it that we could see ourselves living in & began looking in April, 2013. In August, we visited both Cape Cod and the Old Manse Inn for the first time. Based on certain criteria we knew were important to us, we determined that the Old Manse was the place for us. After taking a few months to settle in, we have tried some of our own breakfast recipes, began upgrades to the bedding in various rooms and have painted the Parlor according to a more nautical theme in keeping with the history of the home,” Charlie Heinz told us.
One of the great things about staying in a historic accommodation is learning its history - and the story of the Old Manse Inn does not disappoint.
“The Old Manse was once a two-story farmhouse way back when first built around 1805! It was the sea captain who added the third floor around 1861. In later times, it was the town doctor’s house and also a ‘manse’, meaning the minister’s home where the Inn receives it name,” Brian Blair said.
The sunny, breakfast room was actually a chapel in the minister’s home! Brian and Charlie have even left a small pulpit and large Bible near the fireplace as a nod to the room’s local history.
Not only is the breakfast room a sunny delight with windows dominating three walls, the breakfast creations that Charlie and Brian serve their guests are some of the best we have enjoyed anywhere. From gourmet omelets to baked apples to delicious waffles to pineapple banana cairns to vegetable frittatas, every breakfast is a pleasure to enjoy.
Having guests enjoy their stay is important to Brian and Charlie. “We are trying to create an atmosphere in Brewster where people instantly feel at home, where they can unwind and get away from their everyday lives to rejuvenate themselves, surrounded by history, great rooms and delicious food & drink,“ Charlie said.
"Grab a book, enjoy a cup of coffee, sit on the patio or do whatever makes you feel comfortable," Brian added.
To pamper their guests even further, Brian and Charlie are adding a spa to the property. “Though a ways down the road, we would like to have a spa available to our guests where they can enjoy massages & facials without ever having to leave the comfort of the inn. The inn has good bones. It is a very sound place. We are just trying to enhance our guests' stay through packages and our new spa.” Brian told us.
The rooms at the Old Manse Inn are already nearly picture-perfect but Brian and Charlie have plans to enhance their individuality. "We are renaming all of our rooms. When we are finished, each guest room will be named for a local lighthouse," Brian said.
If guests want to enjoy some quiet time in the parlor or seated in front of the fireplace, the Old Manse Inn offers delicious chocolate chip cookies every afternoon and evening, complimentary Sherry and Port available 24 hours a day, and a Keurig coffee machine with a variety of coffees, teas and even hot cocoa.
If guests want to get out and explore the wonders of Cape Cod, the Old Manse Inn is the perfect hub. "We like to say that we are the perfect place to stay for sightseeing Cape Cod. It is like we are the center, the hub of a wheel. No matter which direction you go, in 20 to 30 minutes you can be in another town or attraction. You can stay here and make little side trips to a lot of great sights," Charlie said.
For LGBT Travelers – Charlie and Brian, a gay couple themselves, welcome you with open arms. “We feel that we really are perfect for LGBT travelers at Old Manse Inn because while we are not in Provincetown, we are at the hub of the Cape, so Provincetown is close but so is access to the rest of Cape Cod, including ferries to Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket for day trips,” Brian said.
The Old Manse Inn in Brewster, Massachusetts is the perfect hub for a Cape Cod adventure and the perfect destination for a romantic getaway. With gourmet breakfasts served in a historic setting, complimentary beverages and cookies, a relaxing atmosphere and two welcoming hosts, we highly recommend the Old Manse Inn.
