Chatham Gables Inn
Chatham, Massachusetts
Relearn what it means to relax
by Steven Skelley & Thomas Routzong
Cape Cod, Massachusetts is a special place. It has a rich history, a unique place in the struggle for equality and some of the most beautiful scenery to be found anywhere on the Atlantic Coast. When staying on the Cape, your accommodations should be equally special. Located in Chatham right at the elbow of Cape Cod, the Chatham Gables Inn is a prime example of all-that-is-right with Cape Cod. It is a historic structure. It is beautifully restored and maintained. And, its' owners are two of the most welcoming people we've ever met. Their goal - to help their guests "relearn what it means to relax."
David and Andrea Smith purchased the Chatham Gables Inn in 2012. David had recently retired from the Nantucket Police Department. Andrea had just completed six years as Spa & Fitness Director at The Westmoor Club.
David and Andrea wanted to create a special atmosphere at Chatham Gables Inn.
"Quiet, luxurious and leisurely – the historic Chatham Gables Inn offers guests the quintessential Cape Cod B&B experience. Few Chatham Bed and Breakfasts can compare to our 170 year-old inn, rich in New England coastal history and hospitality. Whether you join us for a cozy fall weekend, a winter escape or a long leisurely week in summer, everything you want from your Cape Cod getaway you’ll find here at the Chatham Gables," Andrea told us.
"It’s a place where each day begins at your own pace and where a delicious, relaxed meal is prepared just for you and served in a spectacular garden setting. It’s a place where you can linger until noon or head out early for a day at the beach and beyond," David added.
Quiet. Luxurious. Leisurely. Relaxed. If those are words that appeal to you, Chatham Gables Inn offers just the right amenities. Guests of the Inn will be "wrapped in luxury" with spa-influenced amenities including Matouk & Comphy Co. linens, Zents Aromatherapy bath amenities, Kashwere Throws, Turkish towels, and luxury robes in each room. All rooms have LCD flat-screen TV’s, complimentary WiFi, en-suite marbled bathrooms, and designer fabrics and furnishings. King Rooms have a combination of a deep soaking tub with shower and many of the guest rooms have their own fireplace, private entrance, and steam shower.
Breakfast is included in your Chatham Gables Inn stay - and it is excellent! "Your stay with us includes a delicious full breakfast for two in our sunlit Garden Room. After a night in one of our spacious and beautifully restored guest rooms, join us for a sumptuous morning meal between 8-9:30am. The Garden Room opens out to our patio area and grounds, where you are welcome to stroll and relax with your morning coffee. And be sure to take in our breakfast gallery area, where an ever-changing array of works from Cape Cod local artists is displayed," Andrea said.
"The classic Cape Cod B&B fare you’ll enjoy as our guest includes fresh juices and coffee, freshly baked fruit cobblers, Nantucket Tri-Berry muffins, and of course a hearty hot entree. If you have any special dietary requirements or restrictions, simply let us know at the time you book your bed and breakfast stay with us so that we can ensure your morning meal with us is enjoyable in every respect," David said.
The Chatham Gables Inn has a nearly 200 year old history. Captain Moses Nickerson, a China merchant, built this home in 1839 for his bride. He chose the property because it enabled him to walk to and from his ship when in port. The original parcel was approx. 11 acres where sheep grazed. Originally there were six outer buildings, but over the years, and under newer ownership, the buildings were sold. There is one outer building remaining, which will become the owner's carriage house in the near future.
Once you've relaxed and enjoyed the Chatham Gables Inn's many assets, you'll find it is a short distance to many local attractions.
"After breakfast, let us help you plan your relaxing day in Chatham or exploring Cape Cod’s scenic beaches and one-of-a-kind shops. We can guide you to the best spots to stop for lunch and dinner, from elegant restaurants or casual waterside pubs. Return to the Inn after your day and socialize in our common areas, relax on the patio or curl up back in your room with a great book – looking forward a new day beginning at one of New England’s most delightful B&Bs," Andrea said.
There are 2.2 mile walks that will take you to and from the Chatham Lighthouse or a 3-mile walk that takes you past Oyster Pond, Mitchell River on Bridge Street to the Lighthouse and back down to Main Street to The Old Harbor Inn on Old Harbor Road.
The Chatham Fish Pier is just a short, 1-mile walk from the inn.
Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are just a ferry-ride away.
For the LGBT Traveler - David and Andrea welcome you! "Chatham Gables is the perfect inn to visit, no matter what gender, religion, or sexual preference. It is our pleasure to welcome each and every wonderful person who steps through our doorway! We welcome all who enter with the same excitement, respect, and with much gratitude for choosing to share our special inn. People from all walks of life enjoy Chatham and the surrounding areas," David told us.
