Blue Lagoon Island and Dolphin Encounters - Nassau, Bahamas
Blue Lagoon Island and Dolphin Encounters
Nassau, Bahamas
You’ve just got to meet Shawn
by Frank Ioele
If I could give one piece of advice for those visiting Nassau, Bahamas, it would be, "You’ve just got to meet Shawn!"
Don't miss the wonderful opportunity to dance with him, have a smooch with him and feed him a fish.
Shawn is a very playful dolphin who lives on Blue Lagoon Island at the Blue Lagoon Island and Dolphin Encounters.
The boat departure dock/check-in area for Blue Lagoon Island is located at the Paradise Island Ferry Terminal (One Marina Drive) which is the only building between the two bridges on Paradise Island. It is within 5-10 minutes walking distance of several major hotels on Paradise Island and is located across the street from Atlantis. We recommend that you check-in 30-minutes before your departure time.
The Blue Lagoon Island ferry will take you on a lovely cruise across Nassau’s scenic harbor where you’ll see some of the other Bahamian islands as well as homes of the rich and famous such as Beyonce, Christina Aguillera, Eddie Murphy and more.
When you arrive at Blue Lagoon Island, you are escorted to a small pavilion where you will enjoy a brief and informative talk on dolphins and their environment. From there, it’s a short walk to the staging area where you’ll meet Shawn or one of the other beautiful dolphins.
The trainer will take groups of 6 people into the water where you crouch or kneel down on a platform for the fun. Shawn will splash you, come right up to you and kiss you, dance with you as you hold his flippers and lay his gorgeous head on your shoulder. You even get to feed him a fish. Shawn will do some tricks for you that are amazing.
As he glides by, you are encouraged to stroke him but as the trainer playfully warns, “Don’t start anything you can’t finish!”
As you enjoy your dolphin experience, a staff photographer takes photographs and records video that you can choose to purchase to help you remember your special time with these wonderful creatures.
Shawn lives in the lagoon with several other dolphins including his mother whom he recognizes by her distinctive whistle. Males and females are kept apart for obvious reasons. There is a strong net between them and the males will headbutt the net and whistle to the females. Just the night before our visit, one male got through and we understand he had a night of love!
Speaking of love, there are sea lions in residence on Blue Lagoon. You can feed them and touch them too but unfortunately, not the day we were there. The male seal lion was in an amorous mood and was busy chasing the females. You can learn about all the sea lions at Blue Lagoon by visiting http://www.dolphinencounters.com/family-sealiontree.php
A short walk from the dolphins and seal lions led us to a beautiful, clean beach where you can laze away the rest of the day swimming, snorkeling or just resting under one of the palm trees. We had a lovely lunch in the shade under a covered pavilion before we decided to return to Nassau.
